Early
in our town’s history, it was customary for
individuals to meet and discuss various issues surrounding
the town. On one such day, Andrew Jackson Taylor (a
Civil War veteran), suggested a bucket brigade be
organized in Cedar Grove.
As a result, Fire Company #1, now Center Fire Company
#1, was formally organized on May 18, 1908. Fire Company
#1 was operated as a private organization from 1908
to 1911.
Center Company #1 was given official recognition by
the Township, and incorporated on May 12, 1911 when
the Township officials helped pay for a pump and wagon.
Today Center Company #1 is located at Town Hall, 525
Pompton Avenue. There is an authorized membership
of 32 firefighters who operate and maintain Ladder
Truck 74, Engine 71 and Brush Truck 75.
